Wheat Curl Mite.Scientific Name

Eriophyes tulipae

 

Hosts

Wheat and other small grains. 

 

Symptoms

Mites are not true insects, but are closely related to ticks and spiders. Sausage shaped, white, about 1/100 inches Wheat Curl Mites.long. Requires a magnifying glass to see it on the leaf. While this mite can cause direct injury to wheat, it is an important pest because it transmits Wheat Streak Mosaic virus. Feeding causes leaves to roll up, giving the leaf an "onion leaf" appearance. Mites can be seen by carefully unrolling the leaves, and examining it with a 10X hand lens.
